Catucza addresses the Operational Crisis at Daniel Oduber Airport

The Chamber of Tourism and Commerce of the Blue Zone expresses its deep concern over the current operational crisis at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia. Hasty decisions and a lack of clear communication have led to logistical chaos, significant economic losses, and a direct impact on the sustainability and competitiveness of our region as a leading tourist destination.

Daniel Oduber Airport is a strategic pillar for the connectivity of the Nicoya Peninsula and the entire Blue Zone. Disruptions to its operations not only erode trust in our infrastructure but also jeopardize the tourism and economic development on which so many families and communities in the region rely for their well-being.

The unexpected closure of the runway, coupled with inadequate management of the situation, has created unnecessary barriers for international visitors. Small and medium-sized businesses, as well as stakeholders in the tourism chain, are facing challenges that go beyond financial losses: Costa Rica's reputation as a sustainable and reliable destination is at stake.

The Chamber proposes the following immediate and medium-term actions to mitigate the effects of this crisis and prevent future occurrences:

  1. Establishment of a Transparent Contingency Plan: We urge the government to create a working group that includes representation from the private sector to ensure effective solutions with clear timelines and actions. The plan must guarantee that repairs are definitive and carried out under strict international standards, ensuring the safe and continuous operation of the airport.

  2. Strengthening Communication with the Tourism Sector: We call for transparency in decision-making, with regular updates for tour operators, airlines, and affected communities.

  3. Enhanced Tourism Promotion: As a recovery measure, it is vital to implement promotional campaigns highlighting Costa Rica’s resilience and unique attractions, encouraging safe tourism in our country.

Tourism is not merely an economic activity; it is a commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of our communities and ecosystems. We urge the authorities to fulfill their responsibilities and make decisions that prioritize collective well-being and Costa Rica’s international image.

The Chamber of Tourism and Commerce of the Blue Zone reaffirms its commitment to inter-institutional collaboration to overcome this crisis and continue offering unforgettable experiences that enrich our essence as a world-class tourist destination.
